A First Hello And the softness that comes with autumn
Hello from the studio, and thank you for being here. There is an Islay dram sitting at the corner of the desk as I write this, not yet touched. I love Islay whisky throughout the year, but as October arrives and the light shortens, reaching for smoke and sea salt feels like instinct. This is the very first letter I am sending from the studio. It will never arrive on a rigid schedule or crowd your inbox; consider it an irregular splash of colour to brighten your day.
There is a small story I want to share about this season's central piece: how a cheerful gift from a neighbour forced me out of my usual habits, and a moment where I almost ruined the paper.
Echoes in Amber
"Echoes in Amber" began with an unexpected contrast: a vibrant,
loose abstraction of a lemon tree, painted by our artist neighbour and given to my husband for his birthday. Living with that bright energy every day made me want to translate that same uplifting feeling into my own world of amber pigments and single malts.
I began with loose, wet-on-wet blocks of colour, but found myself falling back into strict, geometric shapes. With the clock ticking as the paper dried, I had to choose: keep the safe, orderly lines, or disrupt them. I took the risk, introducing spontaneous organic swirls, and dots of warmth. What felt like chaos in the drying wash became the rhythm that brought the piece to life.
A few months ago, I posted a small watercolour postcard to London for the Winsor & Newton Art Mail project. I slipped it into the postbox and let it go, expecting very little.
Earlier this month, word came through that it had been selected for the exhibition. It felt slightly surreal to think of my quiet Islay scene hanging on a wall in central London. On a sudden impulse, I found myself booking a day trip just to see it hanging amongst all that art from across the world.
How often do you get to stand in a room and see your work exhibited in London for the very first time?
If you would like to see a few more glimpses, I shared a bit on Instagram.
Thank you for being here at the very beginning of this. Wishing you a quiet weekend and a good dram, Clarissa --- Danke, dass du von Anfang an dabei bist.
P.S. If you do have a dram nearby as you read this, I'd genuinely like to know what it is. Just hit reply. --- P.S.
